CHAPTER 22

By the time I arrived at the Baron’s manor, the moon was high, and the horse I’d borrowed from Gwaith was drenched in sweat. I hadn’t bothered saddling the creature, preferring to travel light, so the scent of hay and iron and earth clung to me as I dismounted, handed off the reins, and waited for the guard who had accompanied me here to do the same.

I couldn’t wait for them to come home tomorrow. I had to talk to Destin now.

Once I saw the dead lycanthropes and knew for certain the killer was closer now to Gwaith House than they’d ever been, I decided I would tell his Lordship everything. I needed his help, and I refused to let Erlene travel the roads home without me.

Thanks to the rebel guard I brought along, we made it past the Baron’s security without issue, and damn, there was a lot of it.

We entered the manor – mansion, really – through the servants’ entrance. The kitchen was bustling with food preparations, droves of servants filtering in and out, holding platters and drink trays. My guard gave me directions to the guest quarters where I would find Erlene – I’d used her as an excuse for the late-night trip – before slinking away after a young maid who’d recognized him and beckoned him into a dark corridor.

I’d chosen my companion well.

As I walked out of the kitchen and down the hall towards the front of the house, I saw that the party was in full swing.

The commotion was spread out between two neighboring ballrooms and the main foyer. My stomach growled as I caught a whiff of the tray a maid carried in beside me, some kind of sweet bread with corn filling. Delicious. I couldn’t quite care about the blood on my shoes or my disheveled hair as I followed her. The effects of the ale had long faded, and I was starving.

I should probably grab a bite to eat first; Destin was bound to be furious and would send me away from the party once we discussed the reason I was here, and I doubted Erlene would have anything in her room when I left to watch over her.

Slipping through the grand, pointed-peak archway, I approached the food table nestled into the far corner of the room.

No one gave me a second glance as I picked up a napkin and filled it with cheese and fruit. Those who lingered by the food were already too drunk to realize I didn’t fit in with the room; this corner was surrounded by laughing and frightfully shallow conversation, women decked in ribbons and men in fine suits. Add a few feathers and a hell of a lot more space, and it might have felt like home.

Tucking the stuffed napkin between my breasts and popping a cube of cheese into my mouth, I scanned the floor for Destin. I was sure he knew how to dance. There was no way he would have won Tova’s heart if he didn’t.
